There has been some newfound doubt about whether or not Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will indeed declare for the 2021 NFL Draft, including from the projected No. 1 pick himself.

However, many NFL executives do not see a scenario in which he returns to school, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“You have a better chance of winning the Boston Marathon than he does of going back to school” one source told Schefter.

Another source said, “Any person in that stratosphere would go, and history tells me he goes out.”

Lawrence opened a whole can of worms earlier this week when he left the door open to returning to Clemson by saying, “who knows? There’s a lot of things that could happen.”

Prior to the start of the season, it had been a no-brainer that Lawrence -- who remains out with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis – would declare for the draft with many pundits likening his ability to Andrew Luck. The 21-year-old has been touted as the top draft pick ever since he led Clemson to a national championship as a true freshman two years ago. He is 31-1 as a starter.

Yet, some doubt has begun to creep in, particularly with the New York Jets in position to hold the No. 1 pick.

Some have suggested Lawrence go back to school rather than play for the Jets, or pull a power-play move a la Eli Manning did to the San Diego Chargers back in the 2004 NFL Draft.

Schefter noted Lawrence had begun interviewing potential agents for his NFL career back in March and has been interviewing marketing agents as well.

Lawrence will surely be asked about his future again multiple times between now and when he must decide to declare for the draft. Perhaps we will get a more definitive answer before then.
