Curt Miller, head coach of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, has apologized for offensive comments made during Sunday’s game in Las Vegas. Frustrated Aces center Liz Cambage wasn’t whistled for a foul, Miller complained to a referee, “Come on, she’s 300 pounds.” Cambage, a three-time WNBA All-Star and former league scoring champ, didn’t take kindly to Miller’s criticism, addressing his remarks on Instagram after the game.
“I’m very proud of being a big b----,” said Cambage, who stands 6’8” and weighs 235 pounds. “Don’t ever try to disrespect me or another woman in the league. I don’t know if that’s how coaches run. Like you just try to disrespect women like that from the sideline? You’re so lucky it was during a game. You were so lucky I was out there doing my job.”
“I made an inappropriate and offensive comment in reference to Liz Cambage's height and weight. I regret what I said in the heat of the moment and want to sincerely apologize to Liz and the entire Aces organization,” Miller responded Monday. “I understand the gravity of my words and have learned from this.”
Miller, who was awarded Coach of the Year in 2017, will serve a one-game suspension and was also assessed a $10,000 fine. Cambage, the WNBA’s leader in field-goal percentage through four games (66.7 percent), contributed 10 points, seven boards and four blocked shots in the loss to Connecticut.
