Xavier Aguilera was found around 2:44 p.m. in the San Bernardino County Flood Control channel, according to city officials.

“After more than 20 hours of extensive search and rescue operations, emergency responders located the child’s body this afternoon,” officials said in a press release. “Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy.”

On Thursday night, emergency officials responded to the area of West Main Street after a car was swept off the roadway by floodwaters. Xavier had been in the car with his dad, 26-year-old Brandon Aguilera. The two were separated after being swept away.

Brandon was found on an island created by the floodwaters, officials said.

Barstow Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriffs’ Office are continuing to investigate the incident.
