On Tuesday, Andrés Chait made his first pre-school year address as Los Angeles Unified School District’s new superintendent.
Chait was appointed in June, after the former superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, resigned following an FBI investigation that placed him on paid leave.
“I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to the board for the trust you have placed in me,” Chait said in a speech to school leaders about the upcoming school year from Garfield High here in East L.A. “It is an honor to be selected to serve as superintendent of L.A. Unified, and I do not take that responsibility lightly. Many of you know my story and the work I've done in LAUSD. I started as a kindergarten teacher, moved into school leadership as a principal, then into district roles as an administrator, head of operations, and now as your superintendent. At every step, I've seen our work from different angles. But what has stayed constant is this - the real work happens in schools.”
In his speech, he also acknowledged the safety concerns at that burned-out warehouse in Boyle Heights.
“Please note, we've been actively monitoring, taking proactive measures throughout the summer to keep our campuses safe and ready for the opening of a new school year.
Tuesday marks the first day of the school year for staff, teachers, and principals.
Students returned to class August 12th.
