Many people love Pit Bulls - but the lovable breed isn't always welcomed.

Pit Bulls often get a bad rap. In fact, they are possibly the most misunderstood and misidentified of all dog breeds - because according to The American Kennel Club, they aren't a breed at all! Instead, 'pit bull' is a term that poorly defines a group of traits that can be seen in many different breeds.
So, it can be challenging for owners of these, and similarly demonized pups, to be welcomed into their community or permitted in their apartment complex. This is where Laura Vena and her Blockhead Brigade come in!
Laura is working through her non-profit, The Blockhead Brigade, to change the narrative surrounding these dogs and close the loop by providing support for dog owners who need help parenting their pooch.
"We seek equity and justice for Pit Bulls and their people and are committed to working towards non-discriminatory housing, policies, and media coverage," says The Blockhead Brigade.
The non-profit has several programs and activities to integrate pet owners and their pups into the community. One of the most popular activities is the special pack walk which is open to all breeds, 'blockhead' or not. Just picture, if you can, a dog parade marching in Long Beach!

It's a judgment-free zone with the Blockhead Brigade, "While our advocacy focuses on Pit Bull-type dogs, we do not discriminate in our programs and welcome all breeds, mixes, and snout sizes to utilize our resources."
Laura Vena and her team are creating smiles, and social confidence - Her passion for dogs and community betterment earns her the title of KNX Hero.
