L.A.'s infamous 'trash house' is all cleaned up

Trash House

Gone are the trash bags that were stacked 3 feet high in the front yard of what's been dubbed the 'trash house' on North Martel Avenue, just south of Melrose.

Last week, KNX News reported that neighbors of the Fairfax District home have been complaining about the garbage in the 70-year-old man's yard for years.

Within a day of the report, L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, in collaboration with other local officials, quickly declared the site a hazard and initiated the necessary legal steps to promptly clear the area.

As KNX News' Emily Valdez reports, city crews spent the following few days removing the seven tons of accumulated trash, leaving only a few items on the front porch.

The homeowner's sister told KNX News' Margaret Carrero her brother is autistic and angrily refuses any help offered.

City and county officials said they are working on getting the man support. "We need to take care of him," said Mayor Bass. "I heard that he does have family, and so I'm going to be talking to the county officials and figure out how we get care for him because, again, we can't just view this as a situation of an individual that compiled trash."
