The Los Angeles Police Department is being sued over its use of numerous privately-operated surveillance cameras across the city.

KNX News’ Craig Fiegener reports that the company, Flock Safety, has automatic license plate readers and sophisticated cameras that also take high-resolution pictures of vehicles with unique dents, paint, and bumper stickers.

The group, Stop LAPD Spying, says the department is refusing to disclose how it's using the company's data, and what it's paying for it.

“What we want to know is what relationship LAPD has had to the rollout of these cameras and what kind of accountability mechanisms LAPD has over these cameras in our city,” attorney Shakeer Raman told Fiegener. “This is a private company that has rolled out these cameras all over the city.”

He added that the city of Los Angeles and the LAPD “thumb their nose” at their public information requests about Flock Safety.

Flock Safety's website says it "generally" keeps information for 30 days. KNX News has reached out to the LAPD for comment.
