Casa Vega honored with intersection renaming

Casa Vega

Casa Vega, one of the earliest Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles, was honored on Cinco de Mayo by having an intersection named after it.

The intersection is named “Vega Square.” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez were in attendance.

“What has grown has become a hallmark here in the San Fernando Valley, something that has been a treasured restaurant here in the South Valley,” Rodriguez said.

The restaurant, located in Sherman Oaks, has been open since 1956, but Christy Vega, the third-generation family member who now owns and operates the storied restaurant, told KNX News’ Jon Baird that the history dates back even further to the 1930s.

“My grandparents immigrated from Tijuana with my father, and they opened the very first sit-down restaurant on Olvera Street - Cafe Caliente,” she said. “And then in 1956, my father, 70 years ago, opened Casa Vega, and so following in his parents' dreams, he did that at 22.”

She said Casa Vega is more than a restaurant.

“It's a place where Angelenos for generations have come to gather,” she said.

The celebration will continue all day at the restaurant, with Mariachis themselves launching the dinner service.
