Officers were dispatched about 4:40 p.m. Saturday to Pollo Campero at 2330 S. Bristol St. to investigate a report of a man down and bleeding, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.
The victim, later identified as Christopher Abrego, 43, of Bakersfield, was found on the ground in the eatery's drive-thru lane, police said.
Orange County Fire Authority personnel rushed Abrego to a hospital with multiple stab wounds, and he was later pronounced dead, according to Santa Ana police Officer Natalie Garcia.
Homicide detectives identified Diego Sartori of Anaheim as the suspected stabber and located him Wednesday at a motel in Costa Mesa.
He was taken into custody and booked at the city jail on suspicion of murder, police said.
"The investigation revealed that Sartori and the victim ... were involved in an altercation before the victim was stabbed and killed," according to Santa Ana police.
Anyone with additional information about the fatal stabbing was urged to call SAPD Homicide Section detectives at 714-245-8390, or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
