If you’ve been to your local pharmacy lately and noticed the shelves looking a bit barren, you’re not alone.
The U.S. is in the grip of a growing shortage of medications, according to a new report released Wednesday by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Drugs currently in short supply include ADHD medications, antibiotics and children’s medicine.
The report shows that drug shortages increased by almost 30% year-over-year in 2022.
“These shortages, which reached a peak of 295 individual drugs in shortage at the end of 2022, have left health care professionals grappling with limited resources to treat patients in need,” Committee Chairman Gary Peters said.
Reasons given for the shortage include economic drivers, poor visibility of the pharmaceutical supply chain and reliance on foreign sources, according to the report.
“Taken together, these underlying causes not only present serious concerns about providing adequate care to patients, they also represent serious national security risks,” Peters said.
