It looks like Spirit Airlines is going away, with the Wall Street Journal reporting it will end all operations at midnight, following the likes of Pan Am, TWA, and Eastern into the airline graveyard.
KNX travel editor Peter Greenberg said it might not have been the most glamorous airline, but Spirit did what it set out to do.
“Believe it or not, Spirit was one of the most on-time airlines in America, and with Spirit, you got what you paid for, meaning there were no surprises,” he told KNX News' Brian Ping. “And you know what, they had a very good operational reliability; however, financially, the model doesn't work when fuel prices are this high, labor costs are this high, and you have no Plan B.”
President Trump told reporters on Friday he may be considering a taxpayer-funded takeover of the airline.
“Well, we're looking at it, but if we can't make a good deal, no institution's been able to do it,” he said. “I said I'd like to save the jobs, but we'll have an announcement sometime today.”
