Stabbing suspect arrested following standoff in Alhambra

ALHAMBRA, Calif. (KNX) – The suspect in two stabbing incidents in El Sereno has surrendered to police following a standoff in Alhambra on Wednesday.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department and Alhambra Police Department were outside a home in the 2300 block of Westmount Drive, KCAL reported.

A SWAT team was sent to the Alhambra residence, and mental health negotiators did get in contact with the man via phone, LAPD Cmdr. German Hurtado said, adding that the suspect has "mental health prior incidents,"

Hurtado said that negotiators were able to coax the suspect to come out of the house.

Police said the suspect is behind the two stabbings in El Sereno that took place March 3, according to KABC-7. One of the victims, 17-year- Xavier Chavarin, was stabbed in the back outside a King Torta restaurant. His family said he tried to get help inside the restaurant when he later collapsed and died.

Around 9 p.m. that same day, the suspect stabbed a 33-year-old man in the 5400 block of Valley Boulevard, The victim survived.

LAPD described the suspect as Hispanic with long wavy black hair and a long beard.

Chavarin's mother showed up at the scene of the standoff as the suspect was being arrested where she was seen weeping into her hands. The boy's grandfather and stepfather were also on hand
