What you need to know to stay prepared
Winter Weather

The Triad is more than likely going to witness some very serious winter weather over the next few days and being prepared is of the upmost importance.
Here's a few things to keep in mind when preparing for cooler conditions:

Things to have ahead of time:

-Extra food and water: A three- to seven-day supply of these items is best and make sure you account for the amount of people in your home
-Flashlight and extra batteries
-Battery-powered radio
-Extra medicine
-First-aid supplies
-Dry Firewood (if you have a fireplace, etc.)
-Candles
-Blankets

If you get stuck at home or work:

-To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, make sure there is proper ventilation for the heat sources
-Let your faucets drip to avoid frozen pipes
-Drinking alcohol in the cold can actually rid you of your body heat
-Keep your radio/phone/tv nearby to keep up with weather updates

If the power goes out:

Keep an eye on your food, you can always get coolers/ice ahead of time and stick it outside to stay cold.
-Layer clothes to keep warm
-Have an available heat source

How to survive in your car:

-Fill your gas tank up ahead of time
-If you have to drive during a storm, let someone know that you are leaving and where you are planning to go
-Dress for the weather in case you get stranded

If you get stranded:

-Stay in your vehicle
-Run the motor every hour for about 10 minutes to warm up
-Make sure your exhaust pipe is clear and isn’t covered by snow or ice
-Stay visible, so you can be found
-You can drink snow if you need to
-Keep a back-up bag in your car at all times which should include flashlight, batteries, fire starter, change of clothes, warm coat, some non-perishable food items, bottled water, whistle, knife, jumper cables, a first aid kit and any medicines you take regularly (you NEVER know!)

Don’t forget your pets:

-Move your animals inside or a proper shelter (they can get frostbite and hypothermia too
-Have extra food and water available for them and avoid metal bowls if possible.
