AMC has ordered a series adaptation of Anne Rice’s “Interview with the Vampire,” reported Variety.
The cable network has given an 8-episode series order based on the 1976 novel, which was subsequently turned into the hit 1994 film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst.
The series is set to debut in 2022 on both AMC and its streaming platform AMC+.
“Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” producer Mark Johnson will executive produce the project and also oversee turning 18 of Rice’s books into a new vampire television universe.
“The challenge of adapting for television the groundbreaking and immensely compelling work of Anne Rice is both intimidating and exhilarating,” Johnson said. “Having previously produced films from such singular works, I recognize both the responsibility and the obligation we owe the material.”
AMC previously acquired the rights to Rice’s "The Vampire Chronicles" and "The Lives of the Mayfair Witches” series, which includes the titles "Interview With The Vampire," "The Vampire Lestat," "The Queen of the Damned," and "The Witching Hour," among others.
"This is a day we have been looking forward to since we acquired this legendary Anne Rice collection a little more than a year ago," added AMC Networks and AMC Studios president of original programming Dan McDermott. "We can't wait to share this new interpretation of the classic brought to life by Rolin [Jones] and Mark, as we continue to work on developing the entire collection."
The renowned author and her son Christopher Rice are also attached as non-writing executive producers.
While casting has yet to be announced, it is unknown if Cruise, Pitt, or Dunst will make an appearance in the television adaptation.
The film, directed by Neil Jordan, made more than $220 million at the global box office and also starred Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, Stephen Rhea and Thandie Newton.
