(WWJ) Kroger has announced fully vaccinated customers will no longer be required to wear a mask starting Thursday, May 20.

In a statement, the Ohio-based grocery giant announced its updating its policy based on the new CDC guidelines and after consulting its corporate Chief Medical Officer.

If a state or local mandate exists in the area, the store will align with the policy in its local area.

There are some caveats:

-Associates in Kroger pharmacies and clinic locations will be required to continue wearing a mask due to the CDC’s guidance for healthcare settings.

-Non-vaccinated customers must continue to wear a mask

-Any fully vaccinated individual may wear a mask in the store or other Kroger facilities if they wish to do so.

“Most" fully vaccinated employees will also no longer be required to wear a mask in Kroger stores, distribution centers, plants and offices; the grocery chain said.

Kroger said it will also continue to use “enhanced cleaning and physical distancing” in its locations and offer employees a one-time $100 payment for receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Trader Joe's, Walmart, Lowe's, Target, Home Depot, and Sam's Club have also dropped its mask requirement for fully vaccinated customers in the wake of the CDC's updated guidance. None of the chains announced any intentions to require proof of vaccination.

The CDC says even fully vaccinated people with compromised immune systems, including those undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplant survivors, should consult their doctor before deciding to remove their mask.
