Remote work has become more prevalent, especially in the past year, but how do certain cities fare when it comes to accommodating their at-home workforce?

Well, MakeMyMove.com did a ranking of the top 10 cities for remote work, and Pittsburgh made the cut.

The cities in no particular order are as followed:

1. Chattanooga, Tennessee
2. Detroit, Michigan
3. Hartford, Connecticut
4. Lafayette, Louisiana
5. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
6. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
7. Rochester, New York
8. Springfield, Massachusetts
9. Virginia Beach, Virginia
10. Youngstown, Ohio

The necessity of remote work became even more apparent when the pandemic started in 2020.

"Pandemic induced remote work has empowered people to take more control over where they live, work, and play like never before. That's not only good news for workers and their families but also for smaller, 'flyover' communities that can now compete for the talent and wealth once concentrated in big cities," said Evan Hock, co-founder of MakeMyMove.

"The cities named on our top ten list all share in common the key amenities remote workers told us they look for in an ideal place. Additionally, the economic and cultural renaissance many of these areas have gone through in recent years have made them particularly well-positioned to attract new residents."

As far as the rankings go, affordability, community connection, support for entrepreneurs, family considerations, outdoor pursuits, and land were used as criteria for placements.

MakeMyMove broke those categories into further explanations, as well.

1. Affordability: Relocations are seen as an opportunity to save money, become first-time homeowners, or size up at less cost.

2. Community Connection: Remote workers don't expect to be working from home forever. As the pandemic subsides, many say they are looking for co-working space, opportunities to integrate into the business community, and connect with their neighbors.

3. Support for Entrepreneurs: Remote workers with a side hustle seek a business-friendly environment, local access to capital, and a connection to colleges and universities.

4. Family Considerations: Remote workers with children are evaluating the safety, quality of child care, schools, and cultural enrichment activities.

5. Outdoor Pursuits: For some, remote work is an opportunity to move closer to the beach or other outdoor hobbies, including climbing, biking, skiing, and fishing.

6. Land: Plenty of remote workers have said they plan to relocate to property with acreage.
