PITTSBURGH 993.7 The Fan) - Pirates Broadcaster Bob Walk joined The Cook and Joe Show in his weekly spot from Houston where he saw former Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole throw for the first time against his former team and Bob admitted to the guys he was curious to see which Cole they would see last night.
"I was curious to see what the difference was" Walk said. "As it turned out there was no difference...it was the same Gerrit Cole that we have always seen. A very tough, outstanding Major League pitcher that’s gonna go out there and give any team a tough time. He did that with us minus all of the strikeouts.
Walk said the Pirates did have chances to get to him but he found a way to get through it and get a nice win.
Walk was also impressed to see how Trevor Williams pitched saying he threw a great game and had fantastic control and it’s good to see him back throwing like that because he is key to anything they do the rest of the season.
Josh Bell's numbers have dropped a bit and Bob tells the guys that he is a young player going through the process of having to be the go to guy and he is pressing a bit...but also...
"People quit pitching to him," Walk added. "He started to leave the strike zone a little bit and because of that his numbers are going down but with every big hitter like this it's very tough to see that level consistent all season."
Walk added that he would expect another hot streak to come very soon for him where he will be ripping the cover off the ball.
Walk also thinks this team is starting to get some of the pitching back and as long as nobody runs away with it in the division there is still a chance this team can make some noise.
