PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)-Pittsburgh Pirates Manager Derek Shelton got his first win in St. Louis but his first home win last night in a comeback win over the Brewers after a tough loss the night before where they had blown a 4 run lead.
Shelton told Cook and Joe on his weekly appearance that he is connected to this group and it shows him a lot for his team to bounce back after a tough loss to find a way to win last night by coming back themselves.
The Pirates have gone with different lineups each night and have rested guys early and made certain guys not available out of the bullpen and he tells the guys there is two reasons for that. He says he is going to play different people to give them different opportunities to have them ready in case they need them but also because they need to get answers on some of the players as they continue to evaluate players for the future and to try and get better and the only way he feels they can get better is to play.
He says he won’t ever tell the media and if his close friends Cook and Joe who is and who is not available in the bullpen for example because it provides a completive advantage to those who play because they know what matchups they can plan for. That being said…he did says they are being cautious with some of the pitchers because of the 3 week spring training 2.0 and guys are not as stretched out as they normally are after a normal 7 week spring training.
He also added that in the case of Nick Burdi they are being mindful that he has had multiple major injuries and that will be considered in how they use him especially early.
Shelton’s first win as a major league manager coming in the series finale in St. Louis and he talked about how grateful he was for all of the messages and well wishes he received from former players and the beer shower he got from the players but the moment that stuck out the most was the phone call he made to his Dad who may have been pulling for that first win more than he was.
