MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (93.7 The Fan) – The PIAA has decided to delay fall sports until August 21 so the organization can have further conversations with Governor Tom Wolf’s office for clarification on his recommendation at fall sports be postponed.

In a statement, the PIAA said, “The board believes that the Governor’s strong recommendation to delay sports to January 1, 2021 has a potential negative impact on the students’ physical, social, emotional and mental health. These issues along with the financial inability of many of our students to participate in any other form of non-school based athletic programs affects all students directly or indirectly.”

Over the next two weeks, all voluntary workouts can continue as long as the Governor’s Guidance for All Sports, with local approval is followed. Mandatory fall sports activities will be paused during the two week period.

All 32 board members were present for the meeting that moved into an executive session or a closed door meeting after beginning.

The emergency meeting came a day after Wolf’s administration recommended that fall sports be postponed and that they be delayed until January 1, 2021.

PA Senator and Majority Leader Jake Corman wrote a letter to the PIAA board on Friday asking them to not cancel high school sports.

“We are imploring you not to cancel, but rather to continue with your plan to return to safe sports competition,” the Senator said.

On the Fan Morning Show, WPIAL Executive Director Amy Scheuneman said she doesn’t understand why some sports cannot continue as scheduled.

“That can call be done safely and in a manner that is socially distant in most cases so that you’re not having a high probability of infection,” said Scheuneman.

She adds that delaying fall sports until the first of the year will create scheduling challenges and that they favor a schedule that allows students to participate in all of the sports they intend to.

I can tell you from a WPIAL standpoint we’re going to push to allow all sports to happen in some capacity, not sure what that would look like right now, but we’ll defiantly working toward that solution,” said Scheuneman.

Pittsburgh Public School Superintendent Dr. Anthony Hamlet said that he is recommending that city schools postpone fall sports.

The school board is expected to vote on the recommendation later this month.

One youth sports league in PA voted in on Thursday evening to continue with their season this fall.
