Pittsburgh (93.7 The Fan) - The NCAA on Monday granted a waiver for all Division I spring-sports athletes to receive an extra season of eligibility to make up for the one that was canceled. Athletes in winter sports, including basketball, will not be given additional eligibility. Before the NCAA decision was announced, Pitt coach Jeff Capel told The PM Team he doesn't think his players or other athletes in winter sports should be given the additional year.
"I don't think it should happen for the winter sports," Capel said. "I don't mean to be harsh by that, but what's going on in our country right now is bigger than basketball. It's really unfortunate. I feel for all of the players, especially the seniors and the young men and women in basketball that maybe this was their first time going to the NCAA Tournament or having an opportunity, so I feel for them. This is reality, this is real life. We got 98 percernt of our season in.'"
Capel also shared thoughts on players being able to sign with agents while retaining their eligibility and theNCAA transfer rules. Listen to the interview below.
