The Washington Nationals announced Monday that Dr. Anthony Fauci will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Nationals Park on Thursday night, ahead of the Nats-Yankees game that will kick off the 2020 MLB season.

Dr. Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, has become somewhat of a celebrity as a national health spokesman during the COVID-19 pandemic, and is a “Nats super-fan” according to the team’s statement.

Also, in their statement on Twitter, the Nationals said that “Dr. Fauci has been a true champion for our country during the COVID-19 pandemic and throughout his distinguished career, so it is only fitting that we honor him as we kick off the 2020 season and defend our World Series Championship title.”
