PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Duquesne football adding a 10-year NFL vet to its coaching staff.
Reggie Wells, Jr. joins the Dukes to coach the defensive line while Mike Craig returns to Duquesne to become the defensive coordinator.
Wells won a state championship at South Park High School in 1997 and went on to play offensive line at Clarion University. A four-year starter and All-American, Wells joined his father in the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
Originally a sixth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2003 NFL Draft, Wells would start every game at left guard from 2006-09 with Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. That would include a Super Bowl XLIII loss to his hometown Steelers. He played in 120 career NFL games, starting 93 mostly with the Cardinals, but also with Buffalo, Carolina, Philadelphia and the Chargers retiring after the 2012 season.
Wells spent the last two seasons as a volunteer assistant at California University of Pennsylvania where Craig was the defensive coordinator for the last six seasons. Craig's unit in 2021 was Top 10 nationally in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense.
Prior to coaching the Vulcans, Craig spent two seasons at the defensive coordinator at St. Francis (2014-15), where he played linebacker. Craig coached linebackers at Duquesne under current head coach Jerry Schmitt from 2010-13 after starting his career at St. Francis coaching linebackers and special teams.
