McCarthy says Rodgers can throw it with anybody

What the head coach said of reuniting with Aaron Rodgers

McCarthy says Rodgers can throw it with anybody

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – There was a point where new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy was watching Aaron Rodgers at practice this week and thought ‘damn, that guy had a hell of a coach as a young player’. McCarthy discussed his reunion with his quarterback, official just a couple of days ago.

McCarthy clarified he was kidding about bragging about being that young coach that worked with Rodgers, although that doesn’t mean he still isn’t impressed with the 42-year-old’s abilities.

“I mean, he still throws it,” McCarthy said. “He can throw it with anybody. He made sure we all saw that in the first practice Monday.”

McCarthy said Rodgers is still knocking the cobwebs off and learning some of the new terminology. There still was a sense McCarthy, with all that has happened in the last few months upon his return to his hometown is still working through this. That he’s back with the quarterback he won a Super Bowl with.

“I've been saying it's been surreal since I came here, as far as the job,” McCarthy said. “But we spent a bunch of time, particularly the last two days, of just going back through the offensive system. Cuz our first system that we put together was back in 06.”

The head coach said the conversations before Rodgers signed were to have him with the team for the beginning of Organized Team Activities. There was work to do and some new language and coaches for all to learn, including Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers talks why he returned

“To have Aaron Rodgers here, that's done it at the highest level for quite some time, for your two decades, to have those little things,” McCarthy said. “And he's always done an excellent job of helping not only younger quarterbacks but younger players in the locker room.”

“So he's a tremendous resource and I would recommend that all of our players spend as much time with him as possible. I mean, and that's the older players, particular quarterbacks that I've been around, they always give back. And he does a great job of that.”

It’s been a unique week for both. A lot of memories, but still a future, if only for one more year.

“I think we both talked about the moment walking out on the field together for the first time and it was special,”
