PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) Could former Penguins’ goalie Marc-Andre Fleury be on his way back to the Stanley Cup Final?
All he has to do is collect four wins against the Montreal Canadiens to advance to his sixth Final.
Since being taken by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 Expansion Draft, Fleury and the Knights have made it to the Stanley Cup Final, and are getting ready to start their second Cup Semi-Final in as many years.
Meanwhile the Penguins have only a single series victory to their name in the same time frame.
Fleury has been a leader and star for the Knights ever since their inaugural season and he continues to cement his Hall of Fame career with record breaking numbers.
For starters he is playing in his 15th consecutive postseason, a record for NHL goalies.
At the end of the 2020-21 NHL Season, Flower sits with 492 career wins, third all-time behind only Patrick Roy (551) and Martin Brodeur (691).
Prior to the start of the 2021 semi’s Fleury won his 89th career postseason game, which sits him fourth all-time in that category.
89 wins is only three behind Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr for third all-time; If Fleury can bring home a series win over the Canadiens, he can take sole possession of third place.
While Fleury has been breaking records and taking names, his sights are set to win his fourth Stanley Cup, and first without the help of Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin.
Fleury has already gone through a tough opponent in the Colorado Avalanche, a team a lot of people had winning the Cup this year.
Fans may still wrongfully argue over whether or not the Pens should have protected him in the Expansion Draft, but there is one thing you can’t deny: He is a good goalie who has a chance to keep climbing the history books.
