Huh? Colorado to retire Shedeur Sanders' jersey before Kordell Stewart

What are they doing in Colorado?

Shedeur Sanders may become a good to great player in the NFL and has climbed up mock draft boards over the past few weeks, but was his time at the University of Colorado memorable enough to warrant his number being retired?

Apparently so.

The Buffaloes announced that Sanders’ #2 will be retired during the team’s Black and Gold Day at Folsom Field.

Star cornerback Travis Hunter’s #12 will also be retired.

Shortly after the announcement, people took to social media with many questioning Colorado’s decision.

One person called Colorado “an unserious program” with others wondering how Sanders could have his number retired but not Kordell Stewart, who played for the Buffaloes from 1991-1994 before being taken in the 2nd round of the draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Stewart’s #10 has not been retired and until Sanders and Hunter, only four numbers have been retired in the school’s 135-year history.

“He turned that program from just a joke into an okay program,” said Joe Starkey Tuesday. “I mean, I would be embarrassed about this.”

The move is also hard for some to swallow because Sanders dad, Deion, is the team’s head coach.

During his time with Colorado, Stewart helped the Buffaloes win two bowl games, including the 1995 Fiesta Book, with the team finishing 11-1 that season and ranked #3 nationally.

Colorado finished in the top-10 another time during Stewart’s career as well and he had over 2,000 passing yards each season his last three years.

Stewart was inducted into the CU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.

Sanders and the Buffaloes went 4-8 two years ago and 9-4 this past season.

Sanders did have a passing percentage of 74.0 this past season and 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Not bad, but is that jersey retirement worthy?

Sanders is currently meeting with NFL teams ahead of the draft. He met with the Steelers late last week and has been speculated as a serious landing spot for Sanders, especially if the New Orleans Saints don’t take him at #9 overall.
