The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly no longer employing a top executive who joined the team earlier this year as part of its bold overhaul of the front office and coaching staff.
Karim Kassam, hired in February as senior vice president of football operations and strategy, is out after he and the team agreed it was best to go in "different directions," according to Tony Khan, a Jaguars executive and the son of owner Shad Khan.
"Karim and the team have come to the conclusion that it is in our mutual best interest to move in different directions," Khan told ESPN. "We wish Karim nothing but the best."
The move comes as a minor stunner, given Kassam's title and his very brief time in the role. No specific reason was given for why things didn't work out, though Khan's note of well wishes would seem to rule out a scandal. He was hired specifically to help in analytics, tech, and salary cap management, and previously had stints with the Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Steelers, ESPN reported.
Kassam's abrupt exits follows the controversial signing of Tim Tebow -- as a tight end, no less -- and more pointedly, the dismissal of a former Iowa strength coach after his controversial exit from the school for allegedly directing racial slurs and taunts at his own players.
It's been an interesting first offseason for the Jags under new GM Trent Baalke and head coach Urban Meyer, to say the least, and they seem to still be figuring things out.
