PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Mars and West Virginia graduate JJ Wetherholt has been selected by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 7th overall pick in the MLB draft.
Wetherholt led the Mountaineers with a .331 batting average and an OPS of 1.061. He hit 8 home runs, 8 doubles, batted in 30 runs, and scored 30 runs.
He made the All-Big 12 first team in 2024 and 2023.
During his time at Mars High School, he was the team MVP, made the All-section and All-WPIAL teams, and was named the 5A player of the year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and TribLive.
Wetherholt becomes the second player from Mars High School to be drafted in the first round of the MLB draft, along with Will Bednar (Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 1st round (14th) of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft).
Mars High School is the only WPIAL school with two first round picks in the MLB draft.
