Hockey insider Darren Dreger says this season could determine if Sidney Crosby remains in Pittsburgh next year.
While talking on TSN, the hockey analyst says if the Penguins miss the playoffs this season and if Crosby doesn't' think Pittsburgh can win another Stanley Cup you could ask to get traded for top prospects.
Dreger says the move could be Crosby helping out the Penguins one last time before moving on to Colorado or New York.
"It wouldn't shock me at all if Sid said look, I want my legacy you collected the pieces' bases on moving me to the Colorado Avalanche or the New York Rangers or whatever the team is. . . that are really going to jump start a rebuild to make this team a contender in the next five years", said Dreger.
Dreger adds that Colorado would make the most sense if a deal did happen since they have prospects like Alex Newhook and Bo Byram along with how many other first-round picks the Penguins would want.
While Dreger wouldn't be surprised by the move, it's not going to happen. Crosby is a first ballot hall of famer, has three Cups to his name and #87 will hang from the rafters of PPG Paints Arena alongside Mario when he career is over.
Sure, there is the old saying that Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Oilers to the Kings, but when was the last time a move like that happened… probably not since Gretzky.
When it comes to the Penguins big three of Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, Letang is out the door first, followed by Malkin and then, in a distant third, Crosby.
It's not going to happen.
