HARRISBURG (93.7 The Fan) - The PIAA Board of directors has voted to allow high school sports to continue this fall, voting against Governor Tom Wolf’s recommendation sports be delayed until January 1.
Sports can begin on August 24, based on a school district’s decision.
The board voted 25-5 in favor of moving ahead.
In a release, the PIAA said, “The PIAA Board of Directors has heard the thousands of voice of student-athletes, parents, coaches, officials as well as community leaders that have contacted up. We remind those individuals who have strongly advocated for athletics that they keep strict adherence to school health and safety plans. All individuals involved in interscholastic athletic communities have a role in the health and wellness of all participants.”
Golf contests can begin August 27, Girls Tennis August 31 and Cross Country, Girls Volleyball, field hockey, soccer, football able to start competition September 11.
Football must have five heat acclimatization days in a row if starting before September 4 and five days of practice must be completed before the first scrimmage.
Based on the scheduling the first scrimmage can occur on September 3, followed by five more days of practice before the first game.
