A former Pitt football star has been charged with assault on the same weekend he was drafted into the NFL.

The Post-Gazette reports defensive lineman Rashad Weaver is facing a count of simple assault.

Police say back on April 18, Weaver punched a woman after an argument at the Foxtail Bar on the South Side.

Weaver was back home in Florida this weekend. He was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the fourth round.

An attorney for Weaver released the following statement on Monday:

“The allegations against my clients, Rashad Weaver, are completely false and reckless. Mr. Weaver takes these charges very seriously, and we look forward to clearing his good name. Without question and without hesitation, we deny Rashad punched anyone, especially a woman. We intend to conduct a full investigation of these charges and intend to pursue all legal remedies available to Rashad.”

He has a court date back here in Pittsburgh October 5.

Weaver played three seasons at Pitt, missing his junior year due to a season-ending injury.

He recorded a total of 109 tackles during his time with the Panthers recovering four fumble and forcing five over his three years.
