CRANBERRY TWP, PA (93.7 The Fan) – The overhaul of the Pens bottom six forwards continued with the signing of 34-year-old Lars Eller on Saturday afternoon. The left-handed shot will get two-years at nearly $5 million.
The center spent most of the last seven years with the Capitals playing in 488 games with 87 goals and 121 assists and would average nearly 100 hits a season. The former first-round pick also won 50% of his faceoffs with Washington. He started his career with six seasons with Montreal scoring 71 goals in 435 games. He was traded at the deadline to Colorado last year, playing 24 games with seven points. His 12 goals against the Pens are the second-most against any team in his career.
“He is someone we keyed in on early in free agency,” said Pens President Kyle Dubas. “Mike Sullivan and myself and Todd (Reirden) spoke with him today on the phone, right after noon. We were able to share with him what our plan would be and where we were going to go with him. We were happy that was a great fit for us because that’s a really hard position to fill. Someone that not only can play that role, but wants to play that role.”
“The Eller signing was really, really key for us.”
Eller was the sixth move the Pens made on the opening day of free agency.
