PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pens have a problem, not as much in the two-game losing streak following a 5-1 loss to Buffalo, as they have a problem with the league understanding what is goalie interference.
The Pens have challenged goalie interference against their goaltender 7 times, and lost all 7 challenges.
Thursday, with the Sabres on a five-minute power play after Evgeni Malkin was ejected, Dan Muse believed Buffalo winger Josh Doan interfered with Pens goalie Arturs Silovs to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead.
After a review, the original call was upheld as a goal, and not ruled goalie interference. That’s not what Muse believes was the right call.
“It was goalie interference because their player skated into the blue paint, made contact with our goalie which effected the play, which is the rule,” Muse said. “He came in and made contact.
Afterwards there is a little bit of a push, he initiated the contact in there, so by the rules, it’s goalie interference.”
“I still feel like it’s goalie interference. It seems like it changes day-to-day now.”
“This one I thought was pretty clear.”
“I don’t know what they are not seeing,” Silovs said. “I have no idea. It always goes against us. If we challenge we lose. It’s hard when they change the momentum of the game.”
“It sucks when you are almost positive a call should go one way and it doesn’t quite happen for you,” said forward Bryan Rust. “It's tough to reign in those emotions and keep on playing especially when it seems like it just continues to happen.”
“I don’t know, other guy gets a little touch, it doesn’t count,” SIlovs continued. “It was blatant, he didn’t try to avoid me. He just went through me, what am I supposed to do.”
“I don’t know what is goalie interference anymore in this league.”
Pens are home Saturday to the Flyers and Sunday to Boston.
