93.7 The Fan (PITTSBURGH) - At the beginning of the road trip for the Penguins the picture was pretty clear, gain as many points as you can in the next four games. The Penguins came away with two. Had they not blown their 3-1 lead to the Flames Saturday, it would have been four.
"I think we had a tough loss, I don't know if we did a good enough job of just moving by it," said Sidney Crosby. "You got to find a way to move by it, we probably didn't do a good enough job."
Down 1-0 after the first period against the Oilers, the Penguins gave up 4 goals in the second period that led to a 6-1 rout.
"I don't think there's a lot to be said tonight. We got to find a way to go home and regroup. Not a lot was said tonight," said Mike Sullivan. We'll try to get some rest, we'll fly home and address tomorrow when it comes. Obviously we're in a fight for the playoffs, with every missed opportunity, the runway gets shorter, it gets stacked against us a little bit more. We understand the circumstance we're in, we got to respond."
The Penguins currently sit 9 points back in the Metropolitan Division and 10 points back in the Wild Card behind Tampa Bay. The Pens have some conversations to be had between now and the March 8th trade deadline. When asked if the bigger picture is emerging with the trade deadline and losing three in a row, Sidney Crosby made it clear he doesn't think the season is over yet.
"The deadline date hasn't changed and we still need to get points, I don't know what picture you're talking about. It's the same situation as it was yesterday."
The Penguins scored one or fewer goals for the 12th time this season (1-10-1) and allowed 6 or more for the fourth time this year.
"I just think we got outplayed, we got outplayed," said Sullivan.
Pittsburgh has two games before the March 8th deadline. They host Columbus Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Washington Thursday at 7 p.m.
