Penguins fall to Sabers despite solid outing from goalie Jarry

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Penguins were in Buffalo today as they took on the Sabers, in which they fell to a score of 3-1.

The story of the Penguins today were the role position battles, with no star players in the line-up.

After a quiet first period, the sabers broke open the scoring in the second with goals from both Victor Olofsson and Tage Thompson.

Olosson's goal came 12:14 into the second period and received the puck from Sabers forward Dylan Cozens in the right circle of the offensive zone. He ripped one on the near side right past goalie Tristan Jarry's glove hand.

Thompson scored not much later at the 18:22 mark of the second period. A forced turnover from Chase Priskie fell to Thompson to which he got past defenseman Ty Smith and shot one over the shoulder of Jarry from the right side.

The Peguins would refuse a shutout in the third period of the game, scoring through Drake Caggulia at the 18:24 mark.

Pens forward Valtteri Puustinen's shot resulted in a rebound that Caggulia scooped up and hit a backhander past the glove hand of the Sabers' goalie.

Caggulia continues to impress this preseason and could prove to be a sneaky effective signing of the summer for the Pens.

The Sabers would seal it a minute later with an empty-net goal from Jack Quinn.

Tristan Jarry manned the goal for the entirety of the game and looked good, stopping 32 out of 33 total shots.

The Penguins return to action on Monday at Detroit to take on the Red Wings.
