PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) It is being reported that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been in conversation and among teams involved in signing high profile free agent Zach Hyman.
Originally reported by the Toronto Star and spread around multiple outlets, the Penguins along with the Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings have been in contact with Todd Reynolds, Hyman’s agent.
For the past five seasons, Hyman has been one of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ unsung heroes, performing on both sides of the puck.
Since the 2016-17 season, Hyman has picked up 82 goals, 92 assists, and 179 points.
If the Penguins want to swing a Hyman deal a roster move would have to be made, possibly beyond just losing a player to the Seattle Expansion Draft.
Hyman’s new deal could swing north of $5 million in AAV, while the Penguins currently have $1 million in space.
Early reports say that Jason Zucker could be the player chosen in the Expansion Draft, he carries a $5.5 million cap hit.
Regardless of the outcome, the Penguins could benefit from a player like Hyman in their lineup.
The only thing standing in their way is finding the cap room.
