PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – For as great as Ke’Bryan Hayes has been in his first -31 MLB games. The rookie made an all-time mistake Tuesday night at PNC Park.
Watching his ball sneak over the Clemente wall and inside the right field foul pole, Ke’Bryan Hayes rounded first base as the fireworks went off. Stepped on home as the Bucs had an early 1-0 lead in the first inning against Los Angeles.
But wait. The Dodgers are calling for a review. Surely they think there was fan interference or the ball hit off the wall instead of into the stands.
As we watched replay, there was no evidence of either and it appeared the 1-0 lead would hold. The home plate umpire looks up at the press box and signals the runner is out, official scoring is 1-3.
Turns out the Pirates brightest prospect and a reason to come out to the games made a grievous error. Hayes, the son of a Major Leaguer, didn’t touch first base. He completely missed it as he was watching it creep over the wall.
Last month, since demoted first baseman Will Craig didn’t step on first base leading to a comedy of errors and a couple of runs against. Now your star player misses first base.
It’s early June, but in many ways already a season for forget for Pirates fans.
