BRADENTON, FL. (93.7 The Fan) – He dabbled in the position last year, playing in eight games in right field. Now Andrew McCutchen was back out in right in a Spring Training game against the Blue Jays Thursday night.
Not a lot of action his way.
“That’s how I drew it up,” McCutchen told 93.7 The Fan. “Get one little routine fly ball, a couple of grounders. Nothing crazy and call it a day. We’ll see how the body responds tomorrow. I’m sure it will be fine, just have to get the mind right.”
Manager Derek Shelton said we would have seen it earlier in camp, but they added a new baby to the family and he was out sick a few days.
“Now it’s just getting his legs underneath him,” Shelton said. “With a lot of these guys, it’s just making sure they get their legs back underneath them just because of the fact that they missed days.”
McCutchen said he’s not sure of the plan moving forward. He said he was asked about going out there on Thursday. He said sure, and there he was in right field again. He’s said he’s not sure what the future holds for him, if he would play in the outfield in the regular season.
Asked if it was like riding a bike being in the outfield for the first time this camp.
“Yeah, a rusty one, but it’s like riding one for sure,” McCutchen deadpanned.
A former Gold Glove winning outfielder, the 37-year-old has played 183 career games in right field, compared to 269 in left and 1,332 in center.
