
PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates go to the waiver wire to add to their bullpen on Tuesday.
Left-handed reliever Joey Wentz claimed after he was released by the Tigers. The 26-year-old was 0-2, 5.37 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 60 strikeouts, 38 appearances, one save. Detroit designated him for assignment despite only being scored on in one of his last seven appearances.
A first round pick of the Braves in 2016, Wentz was mostly a starter last year with Detroit and struggled. The 6'5", 220-pound lefty was 3-13 with a 6.90 ERA with 98 strikeouts, 47 walks and gave up 25 home runs in 105.2 innings with a 1.68 WHIP.
His best season at AAA was in 2022 with a 3.17 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 48.1 innings with 53 strikeouts and 20 walks.
Wentz filled the empty spot in the 40-man roster.
