PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Originally reported as a signing during the Winter Meetings in December, the Pirates confirm the addition of right-handed pitcher Elvis Alvarado. He's passed a physical and added to the 40-man roster.
The 25-year-old reliever threw 17.1 innings in the Dominican Winter League this season with 21 strikeouts to nine walks, a 1.04 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. In 175 career minor league games, the right-hander was 15-14 with a 4.25 ERA with 257 strikeouts, 135 walks and a 1.50 WHIP.
Last year in AAA Jacksonville, 3-4, 2.79 ERA, 71 strikeouts in 48.1 innings with a 1.46 WHIP while throwing a fastball that averaged 98 mph. The 6'4", 183-pound righty had 11 saves which was fifth in the International League and had a 1.14 ERA and .159 batting average against in his last 32 outings in AAA in 2024.
Alvarado is one of 16 pitchers on the 40-man roster.
