Pirates closer David Bednar has had a rough start to the 2024 season.
That was on full display when he blew his third save of the season out of four attempts.
The Pirates had a 3-1 lead going into the 9th inning, when Bednar walked a batter and hit two in the inning, giving up four runs.
The Pirates would go on to lose 5-3 and drop to 9-3 on the season.
Something is wrong with Bednar. He either has rust from not pitching much during Spring Training, is still dealing with a lat injury or a combination of both.
It might be best to put Bednar on the IL for a bit to get him right. With such a strong bullpen the Pirates will be okay without the Mars, PA native…for a little bit.
What isn’t best is the fans booing Bednar after his outing.
You can guarantee no one inside PNC Park feels worse about the loss than Bednar.
He’s done nothing but be the ultimate teammate and player since coming to the Pirates.
He’s given his time to charity, taken time for fans and has been generous with the media.
“That’s not fair,” said radio play-by-play broadcaster Joe Block as they pulled Bednar from the game. “I don’t like hearing those boos.”
“I agree, he’s as good as they come,” said color analyst Neil Walker.
"We don't do that here," said Rowdy Tellez, calling the booing of Bednar "unacceptable."
Of course, fans can express their displeasure how they want, but just because you can boo doesn’t mean you should. At least in certain instances.
If there is any silver lining, its that only a little over 10,000 people were on hand. It was a day game with kids in school and many adults having to work.
