PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates infielder Erik Gonzalez will be back for 2021 after signing a one-year, $1.225 million contract according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The 29 year-old Gonzalez hit .227 overall after a hot start last season. Gonzalez hit three homers and drove in 20 (5th on the team). He played 38 games at short and 12 at third last year.
Gonzalez spent three years with the Cleveland Indians hitting .263 with 9 HR and 79 RBI.
The righty-hitter is expected to compete with Kevin Newman for the starting shortstop job and to spell Rookie of the Year prospect KeBryan Hayes at third base.
The Bucs have a few other players to sign or tender by 8p Wednesday.
