PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – A pitching coach with the Astros since 2021, The Athletic first to report the Pirates are hiring New Jersey native Bill Murphy as its next pitching coach.
The 35-year-old Murphy coached with Houston when it won 106 games and the 2022 World Series leading the American League in earned run average (2.90) and WHIP (1.09). He started with the Astros as a rookie ball pitching coach in 2016 and moved up through the organization to minor-league pitching coordinator and then with the big club in 2021. Prior to that he coached at Brown and Georgetown universities, following a college playing career with Rutgers University and Wagner College.
The Pirates parted ways with six-year pitching coach Oscar Marin following the end of the 2025 season.
