Report: Drew Maggi released by Pirates

The feel-good story that was Drew Maggi and the Pittsburgh Pirates has come to an end.

Post-Gazette Pirates beat writer Jason Mackey confirms previous reports that Maggi in been released.

Maggi played over a dozen years in the minors before he was called up the Pirates this past April.

Maggi batted .333 with two hits (one double), one run and one RBI in his six at bats with Pittsburgh.

The infielder got his hit and RBI while the Pirates were rolling in April. It came against the Nationals in Washington.

Taken by the Pirates in the 15th round of the 2010 draft out of Arizona State, Maggi was batting .181 in Double-A Altoona this season with and OPS of .477.

He has a lifetime batting average of .252 in the minor leagues. Maggi was placed on the Curve’s 7-day injured list the middle of June and on July 14 was transferred to the Development List.

Maggi also spent time with the Angels, Dodgers, Indians, Twins and Phillies farm systems over his tenure, before he returned to the Pirates in a trade with the Phillies last August.
