PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates lost for the 66th time this season, 6-2 at Milwaukee, but a new pitcher with an impressive debut.

Acquired from Atlanta for closer Richard Rodriguez, right-hander Bryse Wilson gave up a run over five innings.

“Good first outing for Bryse,” said Pirates manager Derek Shelton.  “That was good to see.  We got him to 75 pitches, the last time out he had been to 55.  Really good first impression for us.”

Wilson said he felt good about his two-seamer and his change-up.  He admitted to some nerves.

“Just trying to come into the new situation with a completely open mind,” Wilson said.  “Good restart, good reset.  Continue to improve my craft and put the team in a situation to win.  It’s been a good transition so far.”

Wilson breezed through his first inning as a Pirate needing seven pitches to get the Brewers in order.  After a 3-2 walk to lead off the second, Wilson got a couple of pop outs and a line drive.

A pair of infield hits, one on a bunt by the pitcher, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly accounted for the run against Wilson in the third.  The 23-year-old righty went five innings, allowing just those two hits that didn’t total 90 feet.

“Swinging bunt by Cain and arguably one of the better bunts I’ve seen in my career,” Wilson said.  “It’s something you have to deal with.  It happens.  It’s how the game rolls.”

Wilson walked two and did not strike out a batter in his Bucco debut.

“Team obviously wants you, so you want to come out and make a good first impression,” Wilson said.

Now, after bouncing back-and-forth this season between Triple A and the majors, sometimes start-to-start.  Wilson gets a weekly spot in the Pirates rotation.

“It gives me a chance to get some consistency going,” Wilson said.  “Get in a good rhythm, good rotation, good routine.  As pitchers in general, especially starting pitchers, that’s huge.  Bouncing around all of the time can be tough, definitely not an excuse, but it can be tough.”

“I think the consistency is going to be huge and continue to improve from start to start.”
