Mason Rudolph is getting support from a surprising voice.
Retired Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had praise for the quarterback in his sixth year with the organization.
Rudolph has 293 yards passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions in a 34-11 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.
It was the best performance by a Steelers quarterback since Roethlisberger's playing days.
On his Footbahlin podcast, with Spence, Roethlisberger said, "I thought that he did a great job of spreading the ball around, I thought he made good decisions . . . I don't know that there was anything that I could say like, he really got lucky."
"Even when he threw it away it was good," added Roethlisberger, who said he made a head's up play late in the game taking a football out of the end zone to prevent a safety after Jaylen Warren tripped.
Roethlisberger said it was a "career day" for Rudolph.
He also said the Steelers should go with Rudolph over Pickett. (This came before Head Coach Mike Tomlin announced Mason would be started).
"Why not give Mason a shot?" asked Roethlisberger. "What he did this week . . . 24 points threw for almost 300 yards, put a little spark into the team, I'd stay with him another week.
Rudolph and Roethlisberger never had much of a relationship, if any.
After he was drafted in the third-round in 2018, Roethlisberger indicated they wasted a pick on a quarterback.
Roethlisberger also didn't see open to teaching Rudolph or taking him under his wing.
Rudolph said on the Steel Here podcast earlier this year, "We weren't close, but would you expect a 37 or 38-year-old to be best friends with a 23-year-old?"
