Expect a lot of NFL players, including some Steelers, to be cut next week.
93.7 The Fan’s NFL Insider John Clayton tells The PM Team, “it is going to be a bloodbath,” around the league.
But with the Steelers focusing on reworking contracts and freeing up cap space, the organization may not cut as many players as some other teams, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be letting go of some big names.
Clayton says cornerback Joe Haden and linebacker Vince Williams are the two names that jump out to him.
“They can’t have (Haden) over $13 million bucks,” said Clayton.
Players like Jets’ DE Henry Anderson was cut in a cost-cutting move along with Dolphins linebacker Kyle Van Noy being cut only a year after signing a $51 million four-year deal with Miami last season.
Clayton says a trend that is starting to emerge, like with Van Noy, that free agents who signed with a team last year are getting cut, “so there’s going to be more dead money than anything else.”
Several unrestricted free agents have already been cut as well with Clayton saying even more cuts are coming.
The 2021 salary cap is expected to be somewhere between $180-$185 million, significantly lower than the over $198 million cap last year.
