Why you shouldn't be shocked if the Steelers trade T.J. Watt

We are not saying the Steelers are trading T.J. Watt, but with the way the Steelers are now operating, you shouldn’t be shocked IF it does happen.

Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo said on The Fan Monday that “nothing is off the table.”

Fittipaldo isn’t saying Watt is going to be traded or that there are even serious considerations right now, but, again, it wouldn’t be surprising.

But, you might be telling yourself, “Art Rooney said that he wants Watt to be a one-helmet guy.”

Andrew Fillipponi and Chris Mueller said Tuesday that the organization has said a lot of things this offseason.

Rooney said he wanted Justin Fields or Russell Wilson in free agency. They’re both gone.

General Manager Omar Khan said he was excited to see DK Metcalf and George Pickens play together. That’s not happening, with Pickens traded to Dallas.

As Donny Football points out, the thought of T.J. Watt being traded seemed outlandish, until a “door was opened” with the deal between Pittsburgh and Miami that is sending Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Dolphins and Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey to the Steelers on Monday.

Why would this situation be any different than that?” said Fillipponi. “He’s 30-years-old, if this was three years ago when he was angling for a contract, I’d say probably a different situation because he has a lot of prime years ahead of him.”

“There are no more sacred cows . . . there’s not more predictability, Steelers do it the Steelers way and you can take that to the bank,” said Mullsy. “They didn’t trade first-round picks for players until they did, to get Minkah. They didn’t do blockbuster, player-for-player deals, like this, until yesterday, when they did.

“The theme of the Steelers offseason is to expect the unexpected,” says Poni.

So, while we don’t expect Watt to be traded, don’t be surprised if it actually happens.
