PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers GM Omar Khan told reporters he mentioned to them at the start of training camp of the possibility of keeping four quarterbacks. He didn’t back down from explaining why.
In finalizing the roster Sunday at 6p, Steelers, and three other NFL teams, kept all four on the roster for the first time in decades. Last time they did it, one of the quarterbacks was an all-around player (Kordell Stewart). All of these QBs are position specific-none would also play as a running back or receiver.
“We're excited, really like that room, like the mix, I like the four guys that are in there and the two young guys are exciting,” Khan said. “Excited about the future with those guys.”
Khan said both ‘young guys’ rookie Drew Allar and second-year Will Howard earned this. He also said this wasn’t just an early roster decision, rather he expects all four on the roster all season.
The phrase kept persisting from Khan was that all the quarterbacks earned their spot. But was it the performance of Mason Rudolph over the offseason and camp become the deciding factor in keeping four?
“Mason's done a good job,” Khan said. “We've known him for seven, eight years already. And you know what was exciting with Mason just watching him get acclimated to his new staff and you know obviously he was a part of coach Tomlin's staff and the group in the past, and then watching him gel with Mike McCarthy and his group was cool to watch and I'm excited to have him.”
Will Howard is currently in concussion protocol, but is expected to be ready to start the season.
