Safety Tyrann Mathieu, better known as Honey Badger, is still a free agent but knows he’ll be just fine.

Talking on the Jordy Culotta Show, Mathieu specifically mentioned a phone call he had with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

“It’s still cool talking to all coaches, the different coaches, because some of these guys I’m a fan of . . . Mike Tomlin calls the phone, ‘Hey, it’s Mike T.’ so just being able to talk to these guys . . . it’s a blessing.”

Mathieu says he isn’t sweating still being a free agent and that he’ll be ready to go when he signs with a new team.

“I’m really just kind of taking it easy, like I say just enjoying the time with family . .
. I’m a real football dude so it’s like once I know I’m playing . . . it’s over, you can catch me on the flip side, I’m about to put my helmet on, I need my playbook, send me the iPad so I can get to work,” said Mathieu.

Mathieu says he want to be a part of a “good group” with great players that can win.

“It’s all about being able to compete, Thursday night, Monday night, Sunday night, Saturday night, Week One,” added Mathieu.

While Mathieu would be walking into a room with Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick, he says the most important part of any team is the quarterback and after Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, there are plenty of questions at the QB position.

Will Mitch Trubisky or a drafted rookie quarterback be attractive enough for Mathieu to join Pittsburgh?

Of course when it all comes down to it, it’s all about money and who will be offering him the most.
