Is Sunday’s final preseason game an audition for Mason Rudolph? Not for the Steelers but for the Lions.

Earlier this week Detroit head coach Dan Campbell indicated that they would be interested in acquiring another quarterback to backup Jared Goff.

Tim Boyle and David Blough are currently battling for the number two spot behind Goff.

I mean I think what we need is we need somebody to really take the reins here,” Campbell said on Thursday. “I mean, somebody needs to step up out of the two and I thought they both progressed last week. Now, somebody needs to step up and run this offense, play efficient, play smart, take care of the football, get us the first downs, and when we get down to the red zone score touchdowns for us.”

Campbell has been reportedly interested in Rudolph since last year’s tie against the Steelers when he saw the physical side of Rudolph’s game.

Former Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch tells The PM Team its’ not uncommon for a team to be interested in another player after playing them but it would need to be a good offer.

“Cause right now there’s no reason for the Steelers to have to get off Mason Rudolph in that manner,” said Batch.

A deal for Rudolph would likely give the Steelers a late-round draft pick.

It’s become clear that Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett are the top two quarterbacks, but injuries also happen in the NFL and if they lose one of their top two, they don’t want to be in a situation like they were in 2019 when they had to go to “Duck” Hodges as their starter.

Trubisky will start the game, followed by Pickett and then Rudolph. If Rudolph plays well, the Lions may soon be knocking on the Steelers door.
